J. Cole’s first single released off Jay-z’s new label RocNation…

“Lights Please”

As the first artist signed to Jay-Z’s new record label RocNation J. Cole has certainly lived up to the hype so far with singles like this one. His story telling is almost as incredible as his own. Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, J. Cole, raised by his mother, was first introduced to rap by his cousin at age 12. As he delved deeper into the music he took to the likes of Tupac, Nas, and OutKast and taking from them a love for telling stories. He began writing at age 15 and had compiled a mass of notebooks full of raps with no beats. He then convinced his mom to buy him a beat machine so that he could make beats solely for himself. From that day forward he never looked back.

Graduating High School he received an academic scholarship to go to St. John’s University in New York. He specifically picked his school so that he could have a chance at getting noticed, but while in college he graduated Magna Cum Laude. Now, freshly out of college he released his first debut mixtape “The Come Up” and his first single “Lights Please”, which certainly does not disappoint.
